We gather to inspire spiritual growth, care for each other and our community, seek truth and act for justice.
November 21 31, 11am - "The Sense of Our Small Efforts"
Thanksgiving is a time of counting the blessings of love we have received. It is a time, as well, of remembering those who can't sit at the table with us this year. There will be one multigenerational service at 11:00am.
Reverend Elaine hosts Reverend Charlie Clements, formerly Director of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and now Executive Director of Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. There will be one multigenerational service at 11am.
December 5, 9am & 11am - "The Present Moment as Perfect Teacher"
Pema Chodron, the American Buddhist nun, writes: "Things are always in transition, if we could only realize it. Nothing ever sums itself up in the way that we like to dream about. The off-center, in-between state is an ideal situation, a situation in which we can open our hearts and minds beyond limit." Rev. Barbara Child will complete her consultation with the congregation by reflecting this morning on what Chodron, a radical and compassionate teacher, might say to us right now.
The First Unitarian Universalist Society celebrates the dedication of its newly acquired Steinway sanctuary piano on Friday evening, October 29, at 7:30 PM, with a recital featuring pianist Joseph Pepper playing works of Bach, Haydn and Chopin. Pepper earned performance degrees from Ithaca College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and subsequently worked as a pianist for the Kansas City Ballet. He teaches in the Music Department at UVM, and has a private piano studio. Church goers have enjoyed Joe's piano virtuosity on Sunday mornings for several years; now we can hear him in a more formal setting. Donations will be gratefully accepted, and a reception will follow in the church parlor. Please join us and celebrate the acquisition of this wonderful instrument. The First Unitarian Universalist Society is located at 152 Pearl Street, at the top of Church Street, Burlington.
SECOND ANNUAL SILENT AUCTION
The Fundraising Committee is pleased to announce that the Second Annual Silent Auction will be held this Fall for 3 consecutive Sundays: October 31st, November 7th & 14th. Last year, through the generous donations of dinner events and services, members and friends of the Burlington UU Society raised over $10,000! These funds helped ease some of the financial strain in the society's budget. But more importantly, the events brought UUs together to meet each other, nurture existing friendships and create a wider sense of community. Participants were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about their experiences. Susan Raimy, writing to a host, says it well: "Such a nice party you had at your house. The food was fabulous, the music amazing and the company fun. Never had met some of those folks before so there was some community building going on. Thanks so much for the great time!"
Get your creative juices flowing! Get out your cookbooks! Check your calendar! We are looking for events that are family oriented as well as for adults. A few dinner examples from last year include: Tapas Dinner-Vermont Style, A Night in Rome, Gourmet Meal, Family BBQ, Pie in the Sky! and Mexican Dinner & Game Night for the Whole Family. Services included home-baked goods, artistic creations, outdoor adventures, items for the home, business, or self and lessons or classes. Plan on setting your dinner date or offering a service anytime from December 2010 through the Summer 2011.
The Social Action Committee has released the latest Social Action Chronical. (October, 2010)
