The local natural gas supplier is advertising the advantages of its product, but before you decide to switch take a moment to look at the advantages of Clean Burn oil heat.
CLEAN BURN: Natural gas ads promise that you can reduce air pollution by using gas.Did you know that modern fuel and new, low-sulfur fuel oil produce the same or less units of particulate emissions as natural gas? Before you switch, check all the facts.
SAFETY: Safety issues arise at every point in the natural gas chain of supply. The demand for natural gas has caused refineries to pump gas without removing impurities such as traces of propane and butane. This potentially produces excessive carbon monoxide emissions as well as excess soot; reducing the life span of stoves, hot water heaters and furnaces as much as 50%. More well known are safety issues with natural gas in your home. Explosions caused by a leak can level a house.Carbon monoxide is the most dangerous component of natural gas. Oil heat is non-explosive and provides ample warning of CO problems.
EFFICIENCY: Modern oil burning furnaces and boilers have efficiencies of 87% and more, at or above the efficiencies for gas appliances. Be sure the figures you read elsewhere are comparing equipment of the same age.
PRICE: Last winter saw a dramatic increase in the price of fuel oil. Historically, however, energy prices travel up and down together. The Consumer Energy Council of America (CECA) said " [Our] analysis shows that over the past twenty years, oil and natural gas prices have tracked each other over time. In the long run, CECA predicts that the trend of price parity will continue." Also, posted gas prices don't always include service and other charges that relate to the overall cost. Fuel oil customers can take advantage of pre-buy and other programs to help protect them from price fluctuations.
